What Size Solar System Does Your Home Need?

How to size a solar system from your actual power bills, and when a 6.6kW system beats a 10kW one.

Start with your bill, not the brochure

Your electricity bill shows your daily usage in kilowatt hours (kWh), and that number is the honest starting point for sizing. A home using 20kWh a day has completely different needs from one using 45kWh, and no standard package suits both. Grab your last two or three bills before you talk to any installer, including us.

The common sizes, roughly

A 6.6kW system produces around 24 to 26kWh a day averaged across the year in Sydney, and suits most small to medium households. A 10kW system suits bigger families, pools, ducted air conditioning, or anyone planning an electric car. A 13kW system is for high-usage homes or anyone planning to add a battery and run mostly off their own power. Bigger is not automatically better: what matters is how much of the production you actually use.

When you use power matters as much as how much

Solar makes power during the day. If your home is empty from 8am to 6pm and your usage peaks in the evening, a smaller system plus a battery can beat a bigger system on its own. If someone is home through the day, or you can shift the dishwasher, washing machine and pool pump into daylight hours, a bigger system without a battery often wins. This is exactly the conversation we have when we quote.

Export limits and your network

Most Sydney homes connect through Endeavour Energy or Ausgrid, and both can limit how much power you are allowed to export to the grid. An export limit does not make solar pointless, but it does change the sizing maths, and it is one of the things we check before quoting rather than after installing.

Numbers on this page are honest general guidance for Sydney homes, not a quote. Your roof, usage and network connection change the maths, which is exactly why we quote from your actual bills, free.
